In 1978, the former Chairman of China, Deng Xiao Ping, pointed out China should send more students to study abroad under the Reform and Opening-up. The Chinese Central Government then formulated the policy of “Supporting students and scholars studying abroad, encouraging them to return to China upon their completion of studies and guaranteeing them the freedom of coming and going” in 1990’s, Since then, the number of Chinese students studying abroad continues to rise. In the past 30 years, 1.39 million Chinese students have gone to overseas universities, with 200,000 in 2009 alone. According to Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, the Vice Minister of Ministry of Education of China, Chinese students studying abroad will expand to an annual of 300,000 in year 2020.
By capitalizing this explosive studying abroad wave, New Oriental Education and Technology Group (EDU) has grown from a class of only 30 students to China’s largest private education service provider. The company today announced better-than-expected earnings results for the third fiscal quarter 2010 and shares hit a new 52-week high of $100.62. The company reported net revenues increased 36.2% year-over-year to $89.2 million, driven by the increase in the number of student enrollments in language training and test preparation courses. Net income rose 33.0% to $13.8 million and EPS was $0.37 compared to $0.28 in the same period last year. For the 2010 fourth quarter outlook, New Oriental Education and Technology expects net revenues to be in the range of $75.5 million to $78.4 million, representing year-over-year growth in the range of 27% to 32%. Shares of the company closed at $99.85 with a gain of 8.52% on more than two times the average trading volume.
Among other top gainers, China Agritech (CAGC) shares slightly climbed back from previous huge sell-off, and broke above the 100-day moving average. The stock ended at $19.80 or 14.10% higher on 50% more than the average trading volume. Today’s bounce back is more of a dead cat bounce. ReneSola (SOL) hit a 40-week high of $7.10 and closed at $7.05 with a huge gain of 9.13% on nearly two times the average trading volume. Melco Crown Entertainment (MPEL) had a major reversal today. Shares climbed back from a support at the rising 50-day moving average and broke above the 200-day moving average. Before the closing bell, MPEL ended at $5.05 with a increase of 8.84% on strong underlying volume. Cninsure (CISG), an insurance agency and brokerage company in China, rebounded from previous losses and added 7.54% to $27.39 on average volume. The stock has a solid support level at its increasing 50-day moving average.
Shares of China Shandong Industries (CSNH) reversed the early gains and lost 14.52% to $2.65 accompanied by light volume. The company today filed a Form S-1 for registration of securities, containing a preliminary prospectus. CSNH states that the company is offering $20 million of shares of the common stock and the number of shares offered will be determined based on the public offering price per share.
China INSOnline Corp (CHIO) pulled back from yesterday’s major gain as profit taking came in. Shares of the company dropped 10.81% to $0.66. The stock currently has a resistance located at $0.95. CHIO is an insurance services web portals. Asia Cork (AKRK), a manufacturer of cork-based building materials, dropped back from previous gains due to positive 2009 financial results. The stock decreased $0.04 or 7.02% with light volume. Shares of China Advanced Construction Materials Group (CADC) continues the downward trend, shedding 4.47%, The stock has a support located at $4.50. China Biologic Products (CBPO) fall back from previous gains and slipped 2.57% for the day. The stock has been bouncing up and down in a range of $10.50 to $11.50 for the past three three weeks. CBPO is a plasma-based biopharmaceutical company.
